Becoming the Man Who Can Build a Future

During a session at Butere Boys High School, what began as a light moment quickly turned into a serious conversation about attraction, discipline, and purpose.

Before the main teaching began, one of our team members, Julia, briefly greeted the students. Earlier that day the team had also visited Butere Girls High School, and while speaking she casually mentioned the visit. With a playful tone, she asked the boys a simple question: “Do you love Butere Girls?”

The reaction was immediate. The room erupted with excitement and laughter, as many of the boys seemed to interpret the question far beyond what Julia intended. After the laughter settled, Julia passed the microphone to the main speaker, Daniel . Rather than ignore the moment, Daniel paused and used the reaction as a teaching opportunity.

“Good,” he said. “Now we know where your attention goes.” What started as a humorous exchange quickly opened the door to a deeper conversation about relationships, responsibility, and what it really means to become a man.

What Do You Look For in a Woman?

Daniel asked the students to take out their notebooks and write down three characteristics they would want in a woman they might marry.

When the responses began to surface, a clear pattern appeared. Many of the answers focused on physical traits: a nice body, attractive appearance, or beautiful hair.

Then another question followed.

“How many of you wrote something about her character? Her wisdom? Her ability to teach you something?”

Only a few hands went up.

The exercise revealed something important. Young men often know how to recognize beauty immediately, but far fewer have learned to recognize the qualities that sustain a strong life and a healthy family.

Physical beauty can attract attention, but it cannot solve the real challenges a man will eventually face. When difficulties come, when responsibilities increase, and when life demands wisdom, appearance alone will not provide the answers.

Character, understanding, and wisdom are what sustain a home.

The Question Is Not Only About Her

At that point, the focus shifted from the type of woman someone might want to the type of man someone must become.

Before a man looks for a good wife, he must first learn how to become a good man.

Scripture describes a man of character as someone who lives with integrity, wisdom, and faithfulness toward God. A man who develops discipline, knowledge, and understanding becomes capable of building a stable future.

A disciplined man recognizes discipline.
A respectful man values respect.
A man who fears God recognizes a woman who fears God.

The Battle Begins in the Mind

The discussion then moved toward the subject of lust and how it begins.

Lust does not begin with actions. It begins with thoughts. It begins with how a person looks at someone and the ideas that start forming in the mind.

The mind functions much like a system that follows the direction it is given. Whatever a person continually feeds into the mind eventually influences behavior.

If the mind is filled with images and desires that focus only on physical attraction, those desires will grow stronger. But if the mind is directed toward purpose, learning, and the pursuit of God, life begins to move in that direction instead.

The mind was designed by God to serve Him, not to lead a person into destructive choices.

Life Is Shaped by Choices

Every man eventually faces choices that will shape his future.

Scripture speaks clearly about this in Deuteronomy 30:19, where God sets before people two paths: life and death, blessing and curse. Then He gives a simple instruction: choose life.

The world often suggests that people can do whatever they want without consequences. But experience and Scripture both show that every decision carries consequences.

Wise men learn to recognize that their choices today shape their tomorrow.

Understanding the Consequences

When the topic turned to relationships and sexual choices, the students themselves began identifying possible consequences: pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and complicated situations that can change the course of a young person’s life.

There is also something deeper involved. When two people unite physically, a strong emotional and spiritual connection can form. Scripture recognizes this connection as something meant for marriage, where two people commit to one another for life.

Outside of that commitment, those connections can create confusion, regret, and lasting emotional effects.

For this reason, wisdom and discipline are essential.

Purpose Comes Before Partnership

The conversation then returned to a foundational example from Scripture.

Before Eve was given to Adam, Adam already had responsibilities. God had placed him in the garden with an assignment: to cultivate it, care for it, and establish order.

Adam had purpose before partnership.

This pattern reveals an important principle. A meaningful relationship grows best when a person already has direction, responsibility, and discipline in life.

Before building a family, a person must first learn how to build a life.

What Truly Makes a Man Attractive

In a culture where attraction is often defined by popularity or appearance, another perspective was offered.

What truly makes a man attractive is the presence of God in his life.

A young man who is respectful, disciplined, focused on his education, and faithful in his responsibilities stands out in a different way. His character becomes visible long before he introduces himself.

Instead of chasing attention, he becomes someone worthy of respect.

Seek First the Kingdom

The conversation concluded with a reminder from the words of Jesus:

“Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

When a man learns to place God at the center of his life, everything else begins to find its proper place. Decisions become clearer. Direction becomes stronger. The future becomes more stable.

Success, relationships, and provision are not the starting point of life. They are the result of placing God first.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the wisdom found in Your Word. Teach us to become men of integrity, discipline, and purpose. Help us guard our minds, make wise decisions, and seek You above all things.

Guide our steps so that the lives we build reflect Your truth and Your goodness.

Amen.
